Arabian Saluki
Scientists of Bio-history say that the tamed
dog has directly stemmed from the wolf. Many times, on various stages
and in many places, Man of Jungle has been capable of taming and domesticating
different types of wolf (let's say since 10-12 thousand years). Hence,
the great multi fundamental types of tamed dog has been the fruitful
outcome of domesticating different types, also, of wolves. However,
the dog is one of the mammals and the very ancient animal related
to the human being along through the old ages. And, to have the man
being able to tame or domesticate the horse, the deer, the elephant
or the lion, he has to capture, imprison and conquer in strength.
But, the dog has been the only among animals which has been obedient
to the sovereignty of the man with no any compulsion; their relationship
has been marked as a friendly one based on mutual joint concern, which
is the hunting which allows each of them satisfy its hunger.
Arabs used to name their children with worst names like "dog", "wolf", "Lion" , "Tiger" and others, while the name "Kaleb" has been the name of a man - an ancestor of our Prophet Mohammed - peace be upon him - whose name is Kaleb bin Murrah bin Kaab, and his tribe has named him in this asking for ampleness. Abu Al-Ruqaish Al-A'arabi has been once asked about the reason of naming their children with the worst names like "dog", "wolf" and others while naming your slaves with the best names like "Rabah", "Marzooq" and "Bilal", they said: We name our children for our enemies, but our slaves for us, aiming at being optimistic in frenzing and surmounting the enemy .
It has been said that the first one to use dogs
in war and in hunts are the pharaohs, and Alexander the Great used
to accompany the trained dog with him in all his wars and too many
conquests. Those dogs having the strong-boned, big-sized and bad-tempered
type, which has been the merit of Alexander the Great marvelous
victories, as Historians said.
The Arabs, also have been very careful about having
a pedigree of high body strong-boned dogs, highly qualified and
well-trained in hunting wild beasts, fighting with boldness and
intrepidity, but never being afraid of lions or other wild animals,
and such dogs have been entrusted to guard the Arab wives, children
and properties while being absent.
At the age of Christopher Columbus, in the Sixteenth
Century, Spanish used to accompany dogs with them in their raids
against the Red Indians, implanting horror in their enemies hearts.
And, the Spanish Captain, the corsair, CORTEZ, in the year 1519,
prepared an expedition consisted of a band of volunteer fighters,
accompanied with large numbers of dogs with which he embarked boldly
the Mexican country, and such enabled him build up a huge colony.
Such large numbers of dogs achieved many valors and braveries, which
was maintained along through the ages. The cuirass used to cover
those dogs with colored and embroidered clothes attracting the sights
of others as a sign of confessing their grace.
Germans, also, during the World War I, had the
precedence in using the dogs in transportation among the army squads
in their various fronts, also in the day and night guards of their
barracks, and also in relieving and aiding the injuries.
There are many pedigrees of different sizes, forms,
colors, with many qualities, natures, merits of either truculence
or meekness, of large or small size, with soft or coarse fluffs,
tall or short, with huge, salient or small mouth, either atrophied.
fat or slim, with high or low limbs.
However, original dog who is obeying its master
or refusing to do is considered a loyal one, and with no doubt such
carries out all that is asked for with zeal and ardor, and it is
always ready to bear all his master's transgressions and actions,
obeying him, yielding to his orders and bearing even his harms and
grievance.
As for the large head, shape of mouth, ears and
tail, such hugely differ from a dog to others. Hence, the dog enjoys
very strong senses of sharp-sighted, sharp-witted, flimsy hearing,
and the strongest sense of smelling with which the dog can trace
and track the quarry without seeing it or hearing its sound. Also,
the dog is capable of smelling his master's moral state having,
meanwhile the ability to very accurately smell in a way which we,
as human beings, can not feel or sense. The dog may smell his master
and know whether such master is happy, sad or outraged. The sense
of smell is much more important than the sense of sight in the life
of dogs, whereas the dog can discover a drop of blood in five litters
of water and can easily pick up and differentiate between the smells
of beef, lamp meat and rabbits despite their big similarity.
Senses in the dog are not all on the same level,
there are pedigrees in which sight sense is the strongest, but in
some others the smell sense is the strongest, and therefore each
need does have the appropriate pedigree.
The best common merit of the dog is the honesty
then fidelity and loyalty. However, the means of benefiting from
the dog and its merits have been well-known since old ages, and
is considered an assistant but also a helper of the man in his hunting
habit , and is his own guide. Hence, the honesty and fidelity are
the qualities which make the dog easily catch the quarry and bring
it intact to his master without either eating all or part of it,
even if such dog is nearly dying because of hunger. Original dog
is precious and beneficial in many matters like its flimsy and delicate
senses, rapid running, strong body, courage, keenness and brilliance,
and is the best guard for his goats and sheep, house and money.
The dog lives for 20 years, its female dog conceives 65 days and
gives birth to 6-12 puppies, while nurses and breast-feeds for 12
weeks. The female dog delivers its puppy blind and such cannot open
its eyes except after 12 days.
Dog pedigrees are different and diverse, their features
and merits vary from being working dogs, to hunting dogs, to accompanying
dogs, and dogs for playing and entertainment. Number of hunting
dogs exceeds the one hundred of different types and pedigrees.

Arabs knew the hunting dogs (hounds), Saluki,
which is attributed to Saluk - a city located to the southern part
of Yemen, which was famous long time ago in making cuirasses, in
hunting and in breeding up excellent kinds of hounds, as well as
the broad experience in the natures of these traps. However, these
hounds have been named after the name of this city due to what importance
and standing it had to them, and therefore it was named after them.
The hounds pedigree had been known for more than seven to six thousand
years before Christ.
Saluk City……in Yeman..!
This had been a great ancient city in Yemen and
located in Hajjour region of Hadramout. The site of Saluk city,
in particular, was called Hasal Al-Zeinah and these had been ancient
city monuments. Some books of old history talked about the fact
that this city houses and parts were built of precious metals. Also,
as mentioned in many stories that one of the Prophet's companions
lost his donkey and he searched for until he found himself in such
city where he was astonished due to what he saw there, knowing that
such city was deserted and not inhabited, then he returned to his
family asking them to tell them about such city, but unfortunately
it was once again lost and hence disappeared and never seen any
of its traces. He took some of its stones and went to Mecca where
the people there told him that such stones were from the paradise
stones , and was also mentioned by the Prophet Mohammed - peace
be upon him - when they told him that such city disappeared till
Doom's day with all treasuries there, and was known as Eram city
as provided in the Holy Book - The Quran - (Eram of columns that
never created like before).
As regarding that provided in the modern history
books that Saluk is a village in Hajour region of Hadramout, and
that the most important and famous thing known for in Saluk village
were the cuirasses, till such duirasses were named in the name of
Saluk as an attribute to the name of hte village, and was famous
to most of the nearby Arabian regions. However, since such village
was located in Hajjour region . The word Hajjour and Ahjar - plural
of Hajar (stone) and was named as Hajjour in relation to Hijran;
in Arabic Language Al-Hijran meant Gold and Silver and those were
the treasuries of Hajjour. Hence, Hajjour included Saluk and Saluk
included Hasal Al-Zeinah and Hasal Al-Zeinah included the monumental
jewels. Nevertheless, Hajjour contained a type of dogs - rapid,
high limbs and clever, and those of hunting dogs and the best in
hunting, the rapid in running and due to the village's people love
to hunting, they used to accompany hounds with them, and therefore
they named such do as Saluki and related this to them. In the language,
in Chapter of "S" & "L" letters and afterwards - a city in Yemen
to which the Saluki dogs are attributed and also the saluki cuirasses.
